Equipped with 15 degrees-of-freedom and a delicate sense of touch, Dextre is the most sophisticated space robotic system in operation today. It has the strength to move heavy objects and the dexterity to perform movements even more complex than human hands.

Ground control

Dextre is controlled entirely by Earth-based ground operators, so astronauts can spend more time on mission-related tasks. Its sense of touch also allows Dextre to do tasks that would normally be performed by an astronaut, thus side-stepping the risks associated with unnecessary space walks.

  • 1710 kg – Dextre’s mass
  • 3.51 m – The length of each of Dextre’s arms
  • 589 kg – The size of payload Dextre can handle
  • 100% – Operations controlled by the ground
