MDA SPACE: OUR HERITAGE

Embark on a journey through time with MDA Space as we trace our history marked by five decades of innovation, groundbreaking achievements and steadfast contributions. From humble beginnings, MDA Space has soared to remarkable heights, leaving a mark on Communications Satellites, Earth and Space Observation, and Space Exploration and Infrastructure.

Dr. John Macdonald and Vern Dettwiler co-found Macdonald, Dettwiler & Associates

Created to keep local engineers and scientists from leaving British Columbia in search of work, the partnership between an engineering professor (MacDonald) and a physics graduate (Dettwiler) started out in MacDonald’s Vancouver basement.

MDA CONTRIBUTES TO ANIK A: CANADA BECOMES THE FIRST COUNTRY WITH A DOMESTIC COMMUNICATIONS SATELLITE IN GEOSTATIONARY ORBIT

Anik A enables the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation to reach Canada’s North. MDA’s predecessor companies SPAR, RCA Victor and EMS were part of virtually all of Canada’s early communications satellite programs.
